Thanks to reader Beth McNamara from Toronto for this true food funny:
I just recently returned from a trip to Wales and the following "funny
food
story" really happened. My cousin's father-in-law, who is a delightful
elderly man with failing eyesight, asked his granddaughter to buy him a
flea collar for his cat as the flea powder he had purchased didn't seem
to
be working. Marie bought the flea collar and when she went to her
grandfather's house found that the normally black cat was brown and its
fur
was sticking up in spikes. She asked her grandfather to show her the
flea
powder, and he pulled a box of Bisto beef gravy granules from his
cupboard. Apparently he had been rubbing this into the cat and
everywhere
the cat tried to lick itself had hardened up into a
point. After running outside to scream with laughter, it took Marie
nearly
a half hour to finally rinse the gravy mix off the cat! Lucky it was
only
Bisto he's bought, too!

Here's a recipe that Dad is sure to like, and he might even ask you to
make
it on days other than Father's Day.
Hearty Black Bean Salsa
1/4 cup (60 ml) bottled Italian salad dressing
1 tsp (5 ml) chili powder, or more if Dad really
likes chili powder
1 can (15 oz, 425 g) black beans
1 can (15 oz, 425 g) kernel corn
1 can (15 oz, 425 g) chopped stewed tomatoes
1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped fresh parsley or cilantro
(coriander leaves)
Put the salad dressing and the chili powder in a large bowl and mix them
together with a fork. Open the cans and place the black beans and corn
in a
colander or strainer. Rinse them with water and drain them well. Add the
beans and corn to the bowl with the salad dressing. Drain the tomatoes
and
add them to the bowl. Ad the chopped parsley or cilantro (be sure to ask
for help chopping if you aren't very experienced with a sharp knife) and
toss with a fork until everything is well mixed. Refrigerate for at
least 1
hour before serving. Get ready for a big hug from Daddy when he tastes
it.
Serves 4 to 6.
