"Two Teddy Bears"
By Murl Black, Copyright 1999
On my last vacation from Phoenix to Lohrville, IA.,
my mother gave me my senior citizen teddy bear
from when I was a wee one. It was a sorry looking
old bear but it had been mine for my formative
years so I was glad to get it.
When I got home to Phoenix, I took out my teddy
bear to show my daughter and granddaughter.
My 6 year old granddaughter took one look at the
sorry little bear and headed for her bedroom
without talking to anyone. She came back with
one of her nice teddy bears and gave it to me.
She said, "You need a new bear grandpa." I was
so struck with her unprompted action that I cried
(which I don't do very often).
So today I have two teddy bears. I would be hard
pressed to tell you which one means more to me.
