Kitchen Clip:
The onion holds a flavorful place at the dinner table as well as several
unique places in history.
The ancient Egyptians considered the onion, with its circular structure,
a symbol of eternal life and therefore buried onions with the Pharoahs.
They also recommended mixing half an onion with beer foam as a way of
warding off death. Believing that onions brought strength, ancient Greek
athletes would eat onions, drink onion juice and rub onions on their
bodies in preparation for Olympic competitions. During the American
Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant reportedly would not move the Union
Army "without onions," which he got within a day.
