                            FOOD FUNNY

Thanks to Carol O'Connor-Eisenberg for what I believe to be a true food funny:

When I was a child we had a lovely elderly lady who had immigrated from
Lithuania living across the street. One day she asked my mother if she
could pick some of the mushrooms (which we thought were just toadstools)
growing in our yard, and of course my mother said yes. Thinking she had
been missing out on this delicacy, she asked our neighbor how she cooked
them. Mrs. D. explained that she boiled them in sugar. "That's
different," said my mother, "are they good that way?" "Oh, yes," said
Mrs. D. "The flies love them and it kills them dead."

                            TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________

The Chinese five-spice mixture is one of my favorite seasonings for
dishes both sweet and savory, so I developed this recipe to see how it
does in the realm of potables. I think it's great.

Five-Spice Vodka

2 Tbs (30 ml) Chinese five-spice powder*
1 quart (1 L) vodka

* Available in the spice section of finer supermarkets and Asian specialty shops

Add the five-spice powder to the bottle of vodka, seal, and allow to
stand at room temperature for one week or more. Strain through a paper
coffee filter and serve chilled or over ice.
Makes 1 quart (1 L).
