Here's a classic food funny from "June, from Penrith, near Sydney, New
South Wales, Down Under":

A woman had just paid for her purchases at the greengrocer and the
checkout was right next to a huge pile of zucchini. The greengrocer
says, "Have a couple of zucchini - they are free." The woman
dutifully puts two in her bag. "Have another six," he says. The
woman dutifully puts another six in her bag. "Take as many as you
want," he says. The woman carefully puts all eight back on the pile.

In light of my soon to be announced move back home to the good
ol' US of A, I decided to do a menu of basic, old-fashioned "Home
Cooking" recipes.

I think of dips as the classic American appetizer, and every cook has
one or two favorite recipes. Here is one with an Oriental flair to
add to your repertoire:

Oriental Dip

3 scallions (spring onions), green and white parts,
finely chopped
1 cup (250 ml) sour cream
1/4 cup (60 ml) mayonnaise
1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped parsley
2 Tbs (30 ml) chopped fresh ginger
2 Tbs (30 ml) soy sauce
1 Tbs (15 ml) chopped cilantro (coriander leaves)

Combine ingredients and serve chilled with raw vegetables, chips, or
toast. Serves 6 to 8.
