Here's a true food funny from reader Janet in Minnesota:
When my daughter Kari was about 4, we realized she had been watching
too many commercials. After eating grapefruit for the first time and
loving it, she turned to me and said, "This is really good! I can't
believe it's sugarless!"

I have to admit to a weakness for butterscotch. It's my favorite
topping for ice cream, I love butterscotch pudding, and when it comes
to hard candies, it can't be beat. Here's an old-fashioned recipe
that your grandmother might have made for you when you were a kid.
Butterscotch Drops
2 cups (500 ml) dark brown sugar
1/4 cup (60 ml) molasses (treacle)
1/2 cup (125 ml) butter
2 Tbs (30 ml) water
2 Tbs (30 ml) cider vinegar
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over
moderate heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Boil until the mixture
reaches the hard-crack stage, 300F (180C). Drop from a teaspoon onto
lightly buttered aluminum foil or marble slab and allow to cool.
Makes about 1 pound (450 g).
