Here's a "from the mouths of babes" food funny from reader Peg Weaver
of Meridian, Idaho:
My daughter Rachel was 5 when she asked that I make her a pie for
dessert. I didn't have enough apples or cherries to make a decent
sized pie so I combined the two for a great taste. Next Sunday at
church I was approached by a lady who asked if I would be willing to
do a bit of baking for the next get together. Rachel immediately
volunteered that I make a CRAPPIE Pie (Cherry Apple). The "if looks
could kill" expression and silence I got was shocking. I quickly
explained what the recipe was. We changed the name to Crapple Pie.
Twenty two years later, we still get looks but... oh well.

Here's a classic taste combination that the residents of Modena, Italy
seem to have kept a secret until recently. You can use this recipe
for any berries, and it also work quite well with mixed fruit salads.
Balsamic Strawberries
4 cups (1 L) strawberries, hulled and sliced
1/4 cup (60 ml) sugar, or more to taste
2 tsp (10 ml) good quality balsamic vinegar,
or more to taste
Freshly ground pepper to taste
Toss the strawberries and sugar and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Add
the vinegar and pepper and serve chilled or at room temperature.
Serves 4 to 6.
