::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Today's food funny is so funny that it took two people to send it to
me. Thanks to Chris and Tom Pierson.

A local policeman had just finished his shift one cold November
evening and was at home with his wife. "You just won't believe what
happened this evening, in all my years on the force I've never seen
anything like it."

"Oh yes dear, what happened ?"

"I came across two guys down by the canal, one of them was drinking
battery acid and the other was eating fireworks."

"Drinking battery acid and eating fireworks!! What did you do with
them?"

"Oh that was easy. I charged one and let the other off."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

This week I depart from my standard format to offer up an easy and
elegant buffet for your New Year's Eve party. Instead of the usual
Starter, Soup or Salad, and so forth, this week I have called all the
recipes "Extras" so that we don't have to worry about which comes
first. Since this is a menu for a buffet supper, all the dishes will
be laid out at the beginning of the meal, and I have tried to make all
the dishes simple enough that, with some advance preparation, the host
and hostess can enjoy themselves as much as the guests. I have also
included suggestions for additional dishes to round out the groaning
board.

These potatoes can be made ahead and served slightly warmed or at room
temperature. Rather than give precise quantities, the instructions
are based on one person, and you can multiply the quantities according
to the number of guests you will be having.

Boiled New Potatoes with Bleu Cheese

3 to 4 new potatoes per person, unpeeled
About 1 Tbs (15 ml) crumbled bleu cheese per person
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Boil the potatoes in enough salted water to cover until tender. Drain
and cool. Slice each potato in half and arrange snugly, cut side up,
in a shallow oven proof baking pan. Sprinkle with the bleu cheese and
season with salt and pepper. Heat under a preheated broiler or in a
preheated 400F (200C) oven until the cheese just begins to melt.
Serve warm or at room temperature.

Caviar with Sour Cream

No New Year's Eve party would be complete without caviar. Naturally,
the type of caviar you serve is dependent on your budget, but even the
inexpensive caviars found in almost every supermarket add a note of
importance to any occasion. Simply serve the caviar in a small glass
bowl or cup and accompany it with a small bowl of chilled sour cream
and thinly sliced and toasted French bread. Tres elegant.
