I'm pretty sure I have run this one before, but it's cute so what the
heck. Thanks to reader "DDor" for sending it in this time.
The monastery out in Wessex was having a bit of a hard time with its
cash flow, because of the dwindling number of monks available to help
with all the work of the group. Brother Andrew and Brother Patrick
suggested opening up a Fish & Chips stand down on the motor way, right
next to the scenic vista area so popular with tourists.
The venture was going well, and one day a tourist asked the monk on
duty, "Are you the fish friar?"
"No, sir," retorted the brother, "I'm the chip monk."

The finale for our "All Breakfast Week" is this quick, easy, and
delicious treat for your breakfast guests.
Apple Cake
1 egg
2/3 cup (160 ml) milk
1/4 cup (60 ml) melted butter
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
2 cups (500 ml) flour
1/4 cup (60 ml) sugar
1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder
1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt
4 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
2 tsp (10 ml) cinnamon mixed with 2 Tbs (30 ml) sugar
Mix the egg, milk, butter, and vanilla together in a small bowl.
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl and
add the egg mixture. Mix with just a few strokes until combined.
Pour into a greased 9-inch (23 cm) cake pan at least 2 inches (5 cm)
deep. Arrange the apple slices on top of the batter and sprinkle with
the cinnamon sugar. Bake in a preheated 375F (190C) oven for 25 to 30
minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes on 9-inch (23 cm) cake to
