Reader "Nettlehart" writes, "This is a dining experience of a
different sort..."
A Russian scientist and a Czechoslovakian scientist had spent their
lives studying the grizzly bear. Each year they petitioned their
respective governments to allow them to go to Yellowstone to study the
animals. Finally their request was granted, and they immediately flew
to New York, and on west to Yellowstone. They reported to the ranger
station and were told that it was the grizzlies' mating season, and it
was too dangerous to go out and study the animals. They pleaded that
this was their only chance, and finally the ranger relented.
The Russian and the Czech were given portable phones and told to
report in every day. For several days they called in, and then
nothing was heard from the two scientists. The rangers mounted a
search party and found the scientists' camp, completely ravaged, with
no sign of the missing men. They followed the trail of a male and a
female bear. They found the female and decided they must kill the
animal to determine if she had eaten the scientists, because they
feared an international incident. They killed the female animal and
opened its stomach. Inside were the remains of the Russian. One
ranger turned to the other, and said, "You know what this means, don't
you?"
The other ranger responded, "Of course, the Czech is in the male!"

I goofed a little with yesterday's recipe, and many of you wrote to
say that you made the savory breakfast rolls and found a pan of
sauteed pepper and mushrooms sitting on your counter when they were
done. Here is the corrected version, in which all the ingredients are
actually used:
Savory Breakfast Rolls
1 package (1 Tbs, 15 ml) dry yeast
1 tsp (5 ml) sugar
2 cups (500 ml) warm water
1 Tbs (15 ml) vegetable oil
1 red bell pepper (capsicum), seeded and finely chopped
1 cup (250 ml) chopped mushrooms
3 cups (750 ml) whole wheat flour
2 1/2 cups (625 ml) all-purpose flour, plus additional for kneading
2 tsp (10 ml) salt
2 Tbs (30 ml) chopped fresh parsley
2 Tbs (30 ml) chopped fresh chives
5 oz (100 g) Cheddar cheese, finely diced
Combine the yeast, sugar, and 1/4 cup (60 ml) of the warm water in a
small bowl and stir to dissolve. Let stand 5 minutes. Heat the oil
in a skillet over moderate heat and saute the pepper and mushrooms
until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Combine the flours in a large mixing bowl. Add the yeast mixture and
the remaining water. Stir to mix well and add the sauteed pepper and
mushrooms, parsley, chives, and cheese. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes,
place in a greased bowl, and allow to rise until doubled in size,
about 1 hour. Knead for 1 minute on a floured surface and roll into a
long log. Cut the log into 24 pieces and roll each into a ball.
Place the balls of dough on a greased baking sheet and allow to rise
for 30 minutes. Bake in a preheated 375F (190C) until lightly
browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm. Makes 24 rolls to serve 8 to
12.
This is a healthy and refreshing drink that will be especially popular
with the younger people at your breakfast table.
Raspberry Orange Smoothie
2 cups (500 ml) milk
2 cups (500 ml) plain yogurt
2 cups (500 ml) fresh raspberries (other berries may
be substituted)
1 cup (250 ml) frozen orange juice concentrate
1 cup (250 ml) ice cubes
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
Combine all ingredients in an electric blender and process until
smooth. Serves 4 to 6.
