::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Here is another true food funny, courtesy of reader Robert Pittenger:

When my dad and mom were first married money was tight, just like in
all new marriages. My mom knew how to save money and here is a story
showing one way she did. Mom would pack my dad a lunches for work.
The lunch would usually have a sandwich of one kind or another in it.
After about a month my dad started to complain the he did not like the
way my mom fixed his sandwiches. My dad would say, "You know honey, I
do not like the way you fix my sandwiches, you only put on one slice
of meat and I like to have two slices of meat on my sandwiches."
After several complaints my mom agreed to start putting two slices of
meat on his sandwich. So the next time she went to get lunch meat she
ask the butcher, "Could you slice the lunch meat half as thick as you
usually do; my husband would like two slices of meat on his sandwich
instead of one."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

You already know about my prejudices against such "ingredients" as
canned condensed cream of whatever soups and funny-looking imitation
cheesy stuff. Here is another to add to the list: those things that
pretend to be rice. The pre-cooked rice stuff and those baggies that
you drop in boiling water don't even come close to the real thing.
The irony is that nothing is easier to cook than rice. Here we have a
method that never fails.

Perfect Rice

1 cup (250 ml) long-grain rice
2 cups (500 ml) water

Note: This recipe may be doubled, or even tripled, as long as the
water to rice ratio of 2:1 is maintained. For larger amounts it is
best to make multiple batches.

Place the rice in a sieve and rinse under cold running water. Bring
the 2 cups (500 ml) water to a rolling boil. Add the rice and stir
once. Bring the water back to a boil and cover tightly. Immediately
reduce the heat to very low and allow to cook for 20 minutes. Do not
remove the lid during cooking. Remove the pot from the heat and allow
to sit covered for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. The rice will stay
warm for up to an hour at this stage. Fluff with a fork or chopsticks
immediately before serving. Serves 3 to 4.
