::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Here's what reader Elaine Thickman has to say about the food funny she
sent us:
Here's a Food Funny that I SWEAR is real. Several years ago one of
our larger friendly local supermarkets ran their usual full-page ad in
our newspaper. One of the food items that was on sale that week was a
well-known dairy product advertised thusly:
SWEAT CREAM 8 oz container .99
No way am I gonna put that stuff in MY coffee.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Our "Quick and Easy" theme continues with this old-fashioned dish.
You might say that just buttering the green beans would be quicker and
easier, and you would be right, but they wouldn't taste nearly as good
as this dish.
Green Beans with Hot Dressing
1 lb (500 g) green beans (string beans, haricots)
4 slices bacon
2 Tbs (30 ml) butter or bacon drippings
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 Tbs (15 ml) sugar
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
2 Tbs (30 ml) chopped fresh parsley
Boil or steam the green beans until they are tender but still firm.
Drain and set aside. Fry the bacon until crisp and drain on paper
towels. Crumble the bacon into small pieces and set aside. Melt the
butter or bacon drippings in a small saucepan over moderate heat. Add
the vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper and bring to a simmer. Add the
bacon to the sauce and pour over the green beans while still hot.
Sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serves 4 to 6.
