Remembrance (NOT a joke)

Do not look for humor in today's issue of Joke du Jour
for you will not find it. Today, I have these words for you:

Last year, Congress unanimously chose to celebrate
a "Day of Remembrance for the Martyrs and Heroes
of the Holocaust." This year, the day falls on April 13th.
This day of remembrance began in Israel in 1951 as
Yom Hashoah, which is Hebrew for "Whirlwind." It is
held each year on the 27th day of the Hebrew month
of Nisan. The day marks the anniversary of the
uprising in the Warsaw ghetto during WWII.

To the six million Jews who perished in WWII,
you will NOT be forgotten! We shall remember!

It is a sad commentary that even today, as we
commemorate this solemn day, the killing continues
around the world. When will we ever learn??

{I will return to humor tomorrow.}

I can't think of a more appropriate poem than this:

"Speak Up!"

First they came for the Communists,
  and I didn't speak up,
    because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
  and I didn't speak up,
    because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
  and I didn't speak up,
    because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

Today we remember the victims of the Holocaust.
Today we remember all of the fallen heroes.
Today we should all remember "Never Again."
Today we should prevent any more genocide.
Send mailto:YomHaShoah@harari.org to speak out.
Do not sit idly.
