Kitchen Clip:
Worcestershire sauce was originally developed in India, but it was the
British town of Worcester, where it was first bottled, that gave it its
name and subsequent fame. As the legend goes, upon returning to Britain
in 1835 from his post as Governor of Bengal, Lord Marcus Sandys so
missed his favorite Indian sauce that he commissioned local chemists to
replicate it. The chemists kept a batch for themselves, storing it in a
cellar where it was forgotten for several years. Later, when they
discovered it, they found it had aged into a sauce of unique flavor. Its
fame soon spread as a favorite sauce throughout Britain and the world.
