                            FOOD FUNNY

I doubt this is a true food funny, but I sure wish it was. Thanks to
(who else?) Rosemary Zwick for sharing it with us.

I was in the express lane at the food store quietly fuming. Completely
ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out
line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when
the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and
asked sweetly, "So which six items would you like to buy?"

Today's Recipe

My source for this recipe insists that the grapes should be peeled, but
that seems silly to me. Peel them if you like, but I assure you that unpeeled grapes are fine for this dish.

Chicken with Grapes

1 chicken cut into 8 pieces
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 Tbs (15 ml) butter
1 Tbs (15 ml) vegetable oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup (125 ml) chicken stock
1/2 cup (125 ml) dry white wine or additional chicken stock
1/2 cup (125 ml) heavy cream
1/2 lb (225 g) seedless grapes, halved

Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper. Heat the butter and
oil in a large, heavy pot over moderate heat and brown the chicken
pieces on all sides. Transfer the chicken to a platter. Add the onion to
the pot and saute until tender but not brown, about 5 minutes. Return
the chicken to the pot and add the chicken stock and wine. Bring to a
boil, reduce the heat and simmer covered until the chicken is tender,
about 25 minutes. Remove the chicken to a serving platter and add the
cream to the pot. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring frequently, until
reduced by about one third. Add the grapes and heat through, about 2
minutes. Spoon the sauce and grapes over the chicken and serve immediately.
Serves 4 to 6.
