             FOOD FUNNY

Here's a classic food funny from our friend Rosemary Zwick:

A man visits his aunt in the nursing home. It turns out that she is
taking a nap, so he just sits down in a chair in her room, flips through
a few magazines, and munches on some peanuts sitting in a bowl on the
table. Eventually, the aunt wakes up, and her nephew realizes he's
absentmindedly finished the entire bowl of peanuts!

"I'm so sorry, Auntie, I've eaten all of your peanuts!"

"That's okay, dearie," the aunt replied. "After I've sucked the
chocolate off, I don't care for them anyway."

             TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________

This classic dish is a favorite at roadside diners and family-style
restaurants for one reason: because it's so darned good.

Hash Brown Potatoes

3 Tbs (45 ml) butter, bacon grease, or vegetable oil
3 cups (750 ml) finely diced peeled potatoes
1/2 onion, finely chopped
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Heat the butter in a heavy non-stick skillet over moderate heat and add
the remaining ingredients. Press into a cake with a spatula and cook
until browned on the bottom, shaking the pan occasionally to prevent
sticking. Flip by placing a large platter over the skillet, inverting
the skillet and platter together, and then sliding the potatoes back
into the skillet. Continue cooking until the second side is browned.
Serves 4 to 6.
