Here's a cute one from Anna Welander:
David wasn't feeling well and so he went to the doctor to get himself
checked. After a thorough examination, the doctor said, "Well David,
based on my examination, the best thing for you is to cut out all sweets
and fatty foods, give up alcohol, and stop smoking."
"I see," said David. "Well, to be honest with you Doc, I don't deserve
the best. What's the second best?"

These scallions may be served by themselves as a side dish, but
you can also use them to garnish a hamburger or hot dog, or add
them to your potato salad. I'll just give you the procedure here and
you can determine the amounts - plan on three to four scallions
per person
Grilled Sesame Scallions
Scallions (spring onions), trimmed
Dark sesame oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Toasted sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Brush the scallions with the sesame oil and cook over hot coals or
under a preheated broiler, turning several times, until golden brown.
Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with sesame seeds if
desired.

Fennel is one of my favorite vegetables, and grilling enhances its
distinctive flavor.
Grilled Fennel with Olives
2-3 heads fennel, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch (1 cm) wedges
Olive oil for brushing on the fennel plus 1/4 cup (60 ml) for the dressing
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1/2 cup (125 ml) coarsely chopped pitted kalamata or other black olives
1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped fresh basil
Juice of 1 lemon
Brush the fennel with olive oil and cook over hot coals until browned on
both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a bowl and add the
remaining ingredients. Toss gently and serve while the fennel is still
warm.
Serves 4 to 6.
