            FOOD FUNNY
__________________________________________________

Thanks to Lillian Toka who was the first of many people to send me
this one:

Alice was to bake a cake for the church bake sale, but she forgot to
do it until the last minute. She baked an angel food cake and when
she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat. She said, "Oh
dear, there's no time to bake another cake." So, she looked around
the house for something to build up the center of the cake. Alice
found it in the bathroom - a roll of toilet paper. She plunked it in
and covered it with icing. The finished product looked beautiful, so
she rushed it to the church. Alice then gave her daughter some money
and instructions to be at the sale the minute it opened and to buy
that cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale
the attractive cake had already been sold. Alice was beside herself.

A couple of days later, Alice was invited to a friend's home where two
tables of bridge were to be played that afternoon. After the game a
fancy lunch was served, and to top it off, the cake in question was
presented for dessert. Alice saw the cake and started to get out of
her chair to rush into the kitchen to tell her hostess all about it,
but before she could get to her feet, one of the other ladies said,
"What a beautiful cake!" Alice sat back in her chair when she heard
the hostess say, "Thank you; I baked it myself."

            TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________

Back in the old days when I used to publish this ezine seven days a
week, the recurring theme for Sunday's recipes was a thing I called
"extras." They were often beverages or condiments - things that
didn't fit into the other "starters" and "entrees" categories. Since
I stopped publishing on weekends I haven't published as many recipes
like those, so this week I hope to make up for it. Here is the lineup
of Pickles and Relishes:

Monday's "Extra"
Green Tomato Chutney

Tuesday's "Extra"
Pickled Zucchini

Wednesday's "Extra"
Sherried Chilies

Thursday's "Extra"
Cornichons

Friday's "Extra"
Pickled Carrot Sticks

Serve this savory condiment with roast meat or fowl, or with cold
cuts, or to liven up almost any sandwich. If you don't have access to
green tomatoes, you can substitute apples with excellent results.

Green Tomato Chutney

5 cups (1.25 L) chopped green tomatoes or apples
2 cups (500 ml) brown sugar
2 cups (500 ml) cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups (375 ml) seedless raisins
1/4 cup (60 ml) finely chopped fresh ginger
1/4 tsp (1 ml) cayenne pepper, or to taste
2-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 lemon with peel, seeded and finely chopped
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil over moderate
heat. Reduce the heat and simmer covered, stirring occasionally,
until the chutney has thickened, about 2 hours. Pour the boiling
chutney into sterilized jars and process in a boiling water bath for
15 minutes. Makes about 6 cups (1/5 L).
