            FOOD FUNNY
__________________________________________________

Thanks again to Rosemary Zwick of Cape Town, South Africa for today's
food funny.

A man noticed a woman in the grocery store with a three-year-old girl
in her cart. As they passed the cookie section, the little girl asked
for cookies and her mother told her no. The little girl immediately
began to have a conniption fit, and the mother said quietly, "Now
Missy, we just have half of the aisles left to go through. Don't be
upset. It won't be long."

In the candy aisle, the little girl began to shout for treats. When
mom said she couldn't have any, she began to kick her mother and
scream. The mother said softly, "There, there, Missy, don't cry.
Only two more aisles to go and then we'll be checking out."

When they got to the checkout stand, the little brat immediately began
to reach for the gum and freaked out when her mom said she couldn't
have any. The mother patiently said, "Missy, we'll be through this
checkout stand in five minutes and then you can go home and have a
bottle and a nice snooze."

The man followed them out to the parking lot and stopped the woman to
compliment her. "I couldn't help noticing how patient you were with
little Missy," he said.

The mother sighed and replied, "Oh, no, my little girl's name is
Francine. I'm Missy."

            TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________

An unusually debilitating bout of laziness struck me this weekend, and
rather than toiling and troubling to develop a unique and original
menu for this week, I decided to publish some of the recipes from the
current edition of World Wide Recipes EXTRA! instead. I hope that
this lineup demonstrates that sometimes laziness is a good thing.

Monday's "Extra"
Fresh Strawberry Bread

Tuesday's "Extra"
Sour Cream Muffins

Wednesday's "Extra"
Forgotten Cake

Thursday's "Extra"
Nanaimo Bars

Friday's "Extra"
Butterscotch Tart

Today's recipe has received so much response from readers that I have
published it not one, but twice in the past. It is but one example of
the more than 150 recipes contained in edition #44 of EXTRA!
available for only $5 at http://www.worldwiderecipes.com/extra.htm or
by sending a blank email to mailto:EXTRAbyCheck@att.net

Fresh Strawberry Bread

2 cups (500 ml) fresh strawberries, washed and hulled
1 3/4 cups (430 ml) bread or all purpose flour
1 tsp (5 ml) baking soda
1 tsp (5 ml) salt
1/4 tsp (1 ml) baking powder
3/4 cup (180 ml) sugar
1/3 cup (80 ml) butter or other shortening
2 eggs
1/3 cup (80 ml) water
1/2 cup (125 ml) chopped walnuts
Cream cheese, softened (optional)
Ground cinnamon (optional)

Crush enough of the strawberries to fill 1 cup (250 ml). Pour into a
small saucepan and heat over a medium flame. Bring to a boil and cook
for 1 minute, stirring constantly, then remove from the heat and allow
to cool. Slice the remaining strawberries and chill. In a medium
bowl combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder. In a
large mixing bowl beat the sugar and butter together and then add the
eggs and water, mixing until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture
to the butter mixture, mixing well to blend. Stir in the crushed
strawberries and walnuts. Spoon the mixture into a greased 8x4x4 inch
(20x10x10 cm) loaf pan. Bake in a preheated 350F (180C) oven for 1
hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
When the loaf has cooled in the pan for 10 minutes, turn onto a rack
to cool. Cut into slices, spread with softened cream cheese, add a
light dusting of cinnamon, and top with the reserved chilled
strawberries. Makes one loaf.
