FOOD FUNNY
__________________________________________________
Thanks to reader Beth Linehan for this vintage food funny:
Eons ago, when big Sunday dinners at noon were commonplace in my area
of the world, there was a food funny going around. It was commonly
supposed that the hired man or an older son of the host family had a
Sunday off from chores and had "lived-it-up" the previous night. As
the story went, the daughter of the house was supposed to have gone to
the foot of the stairs and shouted:
Hey there, Buddy, it's time to rouse,
Get up, you lazy sloth;
Dinner is ready, the guests are here,
And Ma needs your sheet for a table cloth.

TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________
This version of the classic apple pancake also doubles as a one-dish
breakfast for the solitary diner.
"Dutch Baby" Pancake for One
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup (60 ml) all-purpose flour
1/4 cup (60 ml) milk
1/2 tsp (2 ml) lemon juice
A pinch of salt
2 Tbs (30 ml) butter
1/2 apple, peeled and thinly sliced
1 tsp (5 ml) sugar mixed with 1/4 tsp (1 ml) cinnamon
Beat together the egg, flour, milk, lemon juice, and salt until well
combined but not completely smooth - there should be small lumps in
it. Melt the butter in an 8-inch (20 cm) skillet over moderate heat.
Remove from the heat and pour in the batter. Quickly arrange the
apple slices over the batter and bake in a preheated 425F (220C) oven
until the pancake is golden and puffed up. Sprinkle with the sugar
mixture and serve immediately. Serves 1.
