Here's a "know your ingredients" food funny from reader Mollie Keith:
Fairly early in our marriage, as an inexperienced cook with the
pressure of a newly acquired gourmet cook for a mother-in-law, three
active toddlers assisting me in the kitchen, working full time, and
going to school part time, I was trying a recipe from a neighbor for
Jewish Coffee Cake. I had thrown the ingredients together quite
hurriedly while solving toddler problems and keeping a close eye on
the clock for when I'd have to leave for work. My olfactory sense
kicked in during the hour of baking thinking I was smelling cinnamon
and sugar AND onion! I kept hoping my nose was wrong, but when I
pulled the cake out and inverted it on the serving plate, I had to
check it before leaving it for the family meal that evening. Green
specks were quite uniformly throughout the yellow crumbly texture!
One bite and I was digging in the trash to check the ingredients I had
used. Sure enough, I had used sour cream with chives in this sweet
coffee cake! It was quite inedible! For the next 34 years, I have
carefully checked to see what kind of sour cream I am purchasing.

There aren't many candy recipes easier than this one, and the
combination of chocolate, peppermint, and coconut is a real winner.
Peppermint Chocolate Sticks
8 oz (225 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate
1/2 cup (125 ml) crushed peppermint candies
1/4 cup (60 ml) shredded coconut, toasted
Melt the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water. Stir in the
peppermint candies and coconut. Spread the mixture over wax paper or
parchment to make a rectangle about 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm). After
it has set, cut with a sharp knife into sticks about 1/4 x 4 inches (5
mm x 10 cm). Store in an airtight container. Makes about 1/2 pound
(225 g).
