FOOD FUNNY
__________________________________________________
Reader Karen Payne writes, "I have a true story of something I had
said when I was a kid. I was about 5 or 6 at the time. At this time,
I'm 41 years old and work as a nurse's aide at a retirement home and
one of my duties is to clean dentures. One night after I'd brushed a
resident's dentures and put in the denture cleanser tablet, I recalled
something that I'd said as a kid.
I used to watch commercials all the time, and there was a commercial
for a leading brand of denture cleanser tablets on TV. Their claim
was that they removed more food particles from dentures than any other
brand, and as a demonstration they illustrated little black dots as
the food particles, being lifted off the dentures as they soaked
overnight. One night, my mom put more pepper than usual in her mashed
potatoes. I said, "Eew, I can't eat this. It has food particles in it!"

TODAY'S RECIPE
__________________________________________________
Here's a quick dessert that's especially good with a scoop of ice
cream.
Quick Apple Crisp
For the apples:
2 lbs (900 g) tart green apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup (125 ml) raisins
1/4 cup (60 ml) apple juice
1/4 cup (60 ml) firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp (5 ml) ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp (1 ml) ground cloves
For the topping:
3/4 cup (180 ml) all-purpose flour
1/3 cup (80 ml) firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp (2 ml) baking powder
1/4 lb (110 g) butter, cut into small pieces
Combine the apple ingredients in a large saucepan and cook, stirring
occasionally, until apples are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Place the
apples in a 9-inch (22 cm) pie dish. Combine the topping ingredients
in a small bowl and rub together with your fingers until the mixture
begins to form small clumps. Sprinkle the topping over the apples and
bake in a preheated 375F (190C) oven for 30 minutes. Serve warm,
chilled, or at room temperature. Serves 4 to 6.
