I think I have published this one before, but I like it enough to
publish it again. Thanks to reader Kevin Kring for sending it in.
A elderly husband and wife go to the doctor concerned that they may be
developing Alzheimer's due to their increased forgetfulness. After
complete examinations, the doctor informs the couple that it is only
their older age affecting their memory. They should start writing
things down to help them remember them.
They go home and continue their daily routine. Than evening while
watching TV, the husband arises to go to the kitchen to get something
to eat. They wife asks him to bring her a bowl of ice cream. He
turns to go and she reminds him that he should write it down as the
doctor instructed or he will forget it. He states he can remember a
bowl of ice cream. She then responds she wants strawberries on the
ice cream. She again reminds him to write this down or he'll forget
it. He is agitated now and says he can remember a bowl of ice cream
with strawberries. She lastly responds she'd like to have whipped
cream on top. Now I know you need to write this down or you'll forget
it. With that said, he angrily storms from the room to the kitchen.
He returns 20 minutes later and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.
She looks at them disgusted and responds, "See, I told you to write it
down. Where's my toast?"

The final course in our "Medieval Repast" comes from "Curye in
Inglysche," published by the Oxford University Press in 1985. The
original recipe reads as follows:
Take half fyges and half raisouns; pike hem and waishe hem in water.
Skalde hem in wyne, bray hem in a morter, and drawe hem thurgh a
straynour. Cast hem in a pot and therwith powdur of peper and oother
good powdours; alay it up with flour of rys, and colour it with
saundres. Salt it, seeth it & messe it forth.
Rapey (Fig and Raisin Pudding)
4 oz (125 g) dried figs, stems removed
4 oz (125 g) raisins
1 1/2 cups (375 ml) red wine
1 Tbs (15 ml) light brown sugar, or more to taste
1/2 tsp (2 ml) cinnamon
1/4 tsp (1 ml) freshly ground pepper
1/8 tsp (0.5 ml) ground cloves
1 Tbs (15 ml) rice flour or cornstarch (cornflour)
1 or 2 drops red food coloring (optional)
Salt to taste
Soak the figs and raisins in warm water for 30 minutes. Drain and
reserve the liquid. Combine the figs, raisins, wine, sugar, cinnamon,
pepper, and cloves in a saucepan and bring to a boil over moderate
heat. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Process in an electric
food processor of blender until smooth, adding a little of the
reserved soaking liquid if necessary. Combine the rice flour or
cornstarch with a little of the reserved soaking liquid and combine
with the fruit pure in a saucepan over moderate heat. Simmer until
slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Add the optional food coloring
and a pinch of salt. Serve hot or cold by itself, or over ice cream
or hot cereal, or use as a filling for pies or tarts. Serves 4 to 6.
