Here's a knee-slapper from reader Tom Sechser:
A woman is terribly overweight, so her doctor puts her on a diet. "I
want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat
this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you'll have
lost at least five pounds." When the woman returns, she's lost nearly
20 pounds."Why, that's amazing!" the doctor says. "Did you follow my
instructions?"
The woman nods. "I'll tell you, though, I thought I was going to drop
dead that third day."
"From hunger, you mean?"
"No, from skipping."

outdoor barbecue.
Selleriesalat mit Apfeln (Celery Root and Apple Salad)

peeled and cut into thin slices
1 large tart apple, peeled, cored, and cut into thin slices
1/4 cup (60 ml) mayonnaise
1/4 cup (60 ml) sour cream
1 Tbs (15 ml) finely chopped fresh dill
1 Tbs (15 ml) finely chopped fresh parsley
1 Tbs (15 ml) lemon juice
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Boil or steam the celery root until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain
and pat dry with paper towels. Combine with the sliced apple in a
large mixing bowl. Whisk together the remaining ingredients and pour
over the celery root and apple. Toss gently to combine. Serve
chilled or at room temperature. Serves 4 to 6.
