This true food funny comes to us from reader Camilla Crossgrove of
Storrs, Connecticut:
My niece Catherine has a VERY sophisticated palate for her age, and
has cravings for many foods that most of the under-ten crowd would
never be able to look at, much less ingest. When she was eight, we
were talking about the upcoming holiday season, and I asked her "If
you could have anything in the world that you wanted, what would you
ask for?" Naturally, I was expecting to hear something obvious like a
pony or the latest fancy doll, or maybe even a big-hearted wish for
world peace or something. Imaging my surprise and delight, when,
after a moment's thought, she closed her eyes and breathed, "Goat
cheese and artichokes."

This week I offer up a quintet of fruit recipes. I doubt that you
want to include all of these dishes in a single meal, so I suggest you
serve them over the course of a week so your family gets an extra
serving of fruit every day.
Fruit Kebabs
Fresh fruits, such as bananas, apples, pears,
pineapple, melon, peaches, strawberries, or plums
Lemon juice
Brown sugar
Chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds (optional)
Peel, seed, and dice the fruits into 1-inch (2 - 3 cm) chunks. Do not
peel apples, pears, peaches, or plums. Toss with enough lemon juice
to coat lightly and prevent discoloring of the fruit. Thread onto
wooden skewers and sprinkle lightly with brown sugar. Grill over
coals or under the broiler until the edges of the fruit are lightly
browned and the brown sugar begins to bubble. Sprinkle with chopped
nuts if desired before serving.
