Here's a true food funny from reader M.R. La Rochelle:
The story of the "green corn" conjured up and old memory of how my
children gave me a surprise birthday party years ago when I was in the
catering business.
My children, who were all in the 5 to 14 age group, had used all of my
catering equipment to set up the food that they had prepared for the
party, using all of the most large elaborate pieces; the champagne
fountain, the multi tiered platters, large bowls, and all of the
silver serving pieces, which they had set out on my best lace
tablecloths, with the five arm candelabras. It was quite a
presentation, and very elaborate even though, had I done it myself, I
might not have chosen to blow up quite that many balloons or garlanded
quite so many streamers... even for their own birthday parties!
However, their choices for the food were in keeping with their
standard and also within their budget. The table was set out with
baloney, salami, cheese, chips, and soda!

Wrapping up our "Cooking on a Budget" week, this snack also makes
a very economical holiday gift, especially if you buy the nuts in bulk
at an outlet source or health food store. It is a bit labor intensive,
but
that's just a great excuse to get the kids to help out in the kitchen.
Spiced Nuts
2 cups (500 ml) sugar
1 cup (250 ml) cornstarch (cornflour)
2 Tbs (30 ml) cinnamon
2 tsp (10 ml) each ground allspice, ginger, and nutmeg
1 tsp (5 ml) salt
1 tsp (5 ml) cayenne pepper (optional)
4 egg whites
1/2 cup (125 ml) water
1 lb (450 g) pecans, walnuts, almonds, or nuts of your choice
Sift the dry ingredients together into a large, shallow bowl or dish.
Beat the egg whites and water in a small bowl. One by one, dip the
nuts into the egg white mixture, then roll in the sugar mixture.
Place on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 250F (120C) oven for
60 to 90 minutes, until the coating is dry and crisp. Shake off
excess sugar mixture and store in an airtight container. Makes about
1 lb (450 g).
