Here's a classic food funny, compliments of reader Maureen White:

A young couple invited their pastor over for a Sunday meal. While
they were in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on preparing
the meal, the minister asked the couple's little boy what they were
going to be having for dinner.

"Goat," the little boy replied.

"Goat?" replied the startled man of the cloth, "Are you sure about
that?"

"Yep," said the youngster. "I heard Daddy say to Mommy, 'Might as
well have the old goat for dinner today as any other day.'"

Many sources have credited Thomas Jefferson with introducing ice cream
to America following one of his trips to Italy, and it is possible
that the treat originated there. The following recipes assume you
have an ice cream maker, since this is the only method that produces a
smooth, creamy result that is free of ice crystals.

Gelati (Ice Creams)

Gelato di Panna (Cream Ice Cream)

1 cup (250 ml) milk
1 cup (250 ml) heavy cream
1/4 cup (60 ml) sugar

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a gentle boil.
Boil for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and allow
to cool completely. Freeze according to the directions accompanying
the ice cream maker. Serves 6 to 8.

Gelato di Limone (Lemon Ice Cream)

3/4 cup (180 ml) water
Zest (yellow outer skin) of 2 lemons
1/2 cup (125 ml) sugar
1/3 cup (80 ml) fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup (80 ml) heavy cream

Combine the water, lemon zest, and sugar in a small saucepan and boil
for 2 minutes. Cool to room temperature and combine with the
remaining ingredients. Freeze according to the directions
accompanying the ice cream maker. Serves 6.

Gelato di Fichi (Fig Ice Cream)

1 lb (450 g) fresh ripe figs
2/3 cup (160 ml) sugar
2/3 cup (160 ml) water
1 cup (250 ml) milk or half and half

Combine the figs, sugar, and water in an electric food processor or
blender and process until smooth. Combine with the milk. Freeze
according to the directions accompanying the ice cream maker.
Serves 6.
