Reader Kati Wharton of Greensboro, North Carolina knows how I love a
true food funny.
My friend Amber is very intelligent and talented in many areas (she
plays the harp and is an engineering student), but cooking is not one
of her strong suits!
Her mother decided it was high time for her to learn to cook (she was
17!), and Amber agreed, so she volunteered to make the family dinner
one night. They decided that Amber should make something really
simple (macaroni and cheese) and that if she read and followed all the
directions on the box, she would be fine (she is, after all, a smart
girl!). The other ground rule was that Amber would do this herself
(alone in the kitchen with no help from her mother).
When Amber was done, she called her Mom into the kitchen to taste her
creation. Mom looked into the pot of, as she later described it, "mac
and cheese soup" and told Amber that she must not have followed the
directions.
Amber insisted that she had, so her Mom read the box and found her
mistake. She told Amber that she had missed a single, one word
sentence. Amber proceeded to argue that a sentence could not consist
of only one word, but her Mom ended the grammar lesson by pointing out
the sentence which Amber missed. It was, simply, "Drain."

If there is one thing this little recipezine will be remembered for, I
hope it will be for providing numerous healthy alternatives to sugar
and fat-laden desserts that characterize the American diet. Here is
another one for future gastronomes to study:
Peaches Chianti
4 - 6 large ripe freestone peaches
2 Tbs (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
2 Tbs (30 ml) sugar
1 cup (250 ml) Chianti or other full-bodied red wine
Biscotti for garnish (optional)
Cut the peaches into wedges. Combine all ingredients in a stainless
steel or glass bowl and refrigerate covered for 8 to 24 hours. Serve
peaches in wine glasses with a little of the wine mixture spooned over
them. Serve with biscotti if desired. Serves 4 to 6.
