::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thanks to reader Elaine Thickman for today's food funny.

Seem that this corn farmer had been having bad luck; crops kept dying
on him and now he was broke. On the spur of the moment he went to
Frank Perdue, told him of the misfortune with his corn crop failures
and asked Frank's help to get him into chicken farming. Frank was
very supportive, gave the guy advice and a whole bunch of chickens to
start off with and said to keep in touch. The following year the guy
reported back to Frank that all of the chickens had died and could
Frank bail him out again. Sure enough, Frank gave him another bunch
of chickens and wished him luck. A year passes and the same thing
happens and again Frank Perdue helped him with more chickens. Same
time next year, there he is on Frank's doorstep again. "Frank" he
says, "the chickens died on me again. I need help desperately".
Perdue agrees but tells the guy that this will be the last time he
gives him chickens. "Oh, don't worry, Frank" says the poor guy, "this
time it'll be OK. I finally figured out what went wrong. Just like
with the corn--I planted 'em too close and too deep"

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Today's dessert is as simple to prepare as any dessert you'll ever
find, and keeping some on hand might motivate some of the youngsters
in your house to eat more fruit.

Orange Compote

6 oranges, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup (125 ml) orange juice
3 Tbs (45 ml) light brown sugar
5 whole allspice
5 whole black peppercorns
1 cinnamon stick
3 - 4 Tbs (45 - 60 ml) orange-flavored liqueur (optional)

Place the orange slices in a non-reactive bowl. Combine the remaining
ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour the liquid
over the orange slices and refrigerate for at least 8 hours. Serves 6
to 8.
