::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

It looks like the ol' World Wide Recipes Groan-O-Meter is going to get
a real workout this week. This one is courtesy of reader "BEMK."

A young man was in love with two women and could not decide which of
them to marry. Finally he went to a marriage counselor. When asked
to describe his two loves, he noted that one was a great poet and the
other made delicious pancakes.

"Oh" said the counselor, "I see what the problem is. You can't decide
whether to marry for batter or for verse."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Even though I publish three or four meatless recipes in a typical
week, I still get requests for vegetarian recipes. Thanks to all my
vegetarian readers who hang in there during our carnivorous moments.
This menu is not only meatless, but is actually "vegan" since none of
the recipes call for eggs or dairy products.

Hummus is a Middle Eastern dish based on pureed garbanzo beans. The
beans themselves are so mild in flavor as to allow endless variations
on the theme using different seasonings. This version tastes like the
holidays, with the orange juice and ginger, so why not serve it at
your next gathering.

Orange Hummus

1 - 15 oz (420 g) can of garbanzo beans
(chick peas, ceci), rinsed and drained
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/4 cup (60 ml) orange juice
2 tsp (10 ml) grated orange rind
1 tsp (15 ml) Dijon-style mustard
1/2 tsp (2 ml) curry powder
1/2 tsp (2 ml) ground ginger
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Pita bread for dipping

Combine all ingredients except for the pita bread in an electric food
processor or blender and process until smooth. Serve with pita bread
for dipping. Serves 6 to 8 as an appetizer.
