::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Reader Danny Chung bet that I hadn't heard this one before. You lose,
Danny. Not only have I heard it, but I have published it before. It
is supposedly a true story, and another good example of why you
shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.
Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist.....
Scientists at NASA have developed a gun, specifically built to launch
dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the
space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to
simulate the frequent incident of collisions with airborne fowl to
test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about
the gun and were eager to test it on the windshield of their new high
speed trains.
Arrangements were made to borrow the gun. But when the gun was
fired, the engineers stood there shell shocked as the chicken hurled
out of the barrel, crashed into the shatter proof shield, smashed into
smithereens, crashed through the control console, snapped the
engineer's backrest in two, and embedded itself in the back wall of
the cabin. Horrified, the British sent NASA the disastrous results of
the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield, and begged
the U.S. scientists for suggestions.
NASA's response was just one sentence: "Thaw the chicken!"
::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::
If you ask me, any rice pudding is great. This one is a little
different, both in taste and method of preparation.
Greek Rice Pudding
1/2 cup (125 ml) rice, preferably short-grain
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups (500 ml) water
6 cups (1.5 L) milk
1+1/2 Tbs (7 ml) cornstarch (cornflour) mixed with
2 Tbs (30 ml) milk
1/2 cup (125 ml) sugar
Zest of 1 lemon
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
A grating of fresh nutmeg
Ground cinnamon for garnish.
Combine the rice, cinnamon stick, and water in a saucepan and bring to
a boil. Lower the heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes. Add the
milk, cornstarch mixture, and sugar to the pan. Increase the heat to
moderate and stir constantly until the mixture thickens, about 15
minutes. Add the lemon zest, vanilla, and nutmeg and stir to combine.
Spoon into individual serving bowls or glasses and refrigerate for at
least 2 hours. Dust with a little cinnamon before serving. Serves 6
to 8.
