::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Reader Karen Blanchett says in reference to the food funny she sent
us, "I will admit that zucchini is an acquired taste, and those that
acquire it are most welcome to it."

It had been a bumper year for zucchini in my garden. I was offering
some to anyone who ventured near. One day my neighbor came by for a
chat. As she was leaving, I pointed to the box of zucchini on the
porch and said, "Go ahead, take a couple." Rather slowly, she chose
two of the smallest.

"Take a few more," I urged. She did.

"Take all you want," I said eagerly. She looked at me, sighed with
relief, put the zucchini back in the box and walked away.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I haven't even published today's recipe and I have already received
comments from readers. One suggested that, while the Polish people
may drink hot beer, they never drink hot wine. That may be so, but
both these recipes are adapted from the bible of Polish cookery,
"Uniwersalna Ksiazka Kucharska," (The Universal Cookbook) by Marja
Ochorowicz-Monatowa, first published in 1911. I threw in the recipe
for hot beer just to be on the safe side.

Hot Wine (Gluhwein)

1 cup (250 ml) dry red or white wine
1 Tbs (15 ml) sugar, or to taste
2 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
A 1 inch (2 cm) strip of lemon rind

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil
covered. Simmer for 2 minutes. Strain and serve immediately.
Serves 1.

Hot Beer (Piwo Grzane)

4 cups (1 L) beer
1 cinnamon stick
4 whole cloves
6 egg yolks
1/4 cup (60 ml) sugar, or to taste

Combine the beer, cinnamon, and cloves in a saucepan and bring to a
boil covered. Beat the egg yolks and sugar until creamy and light
yellow. Strain the beer and add to the egg mixture slowly, beating
constantly. Beat until frothy and serve immediately. Serves 4.
