I heard this true food funny from my wife's grandmother tonight and I
thought about you. Actually, I thought about the fame and recognition
I would receive if I was featured AGAIN on WWRecipes (remember the
cereal killer?) Anyway, here is the story.
Grandmother's mother used to tell this story about when her brother
was four. (It's an old one; it probably happened in the early 1900's
if I figured it right.) Anyway, he was walking with his father on
their farm in south Georgia, asking questions as four-year-olds tend
to do, and he asked what his father was doing. "We're planting rice"
was his father's reply. The boy thought about this for a minute and
asked "Where are we going to plant the gravy?"

Here's a vegetarian alternative to sausage patties for breakfast.
Bean Patties with Tomato Relish
1 can (15 oz, 425 g) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 medium tomato, finely chopped
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper (capsicum), seeded and finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3 Tbs (45 ml) cornmeal
1/2 tsp (2 ml) each: dried oregano, marjoram, and thyme
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 recipe tomato relish (see below)
Mash the beans with a fork, and mix in the vegetables, cornmeal, and
seasonings. Form into 4 to 6 patties. Fry in a lightly oiled skillet
over moderate heat until lightly browned on both sides. Serve with
tomato relish. Serves 3 to 4.
Tomato Relish
2 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 Tbs (15 m) finely chopped celery leaves
1 Tbs (15 ml) finely chopped fresh basil
or 1 tsp (5 ml) dried basil
2 Tbs (30 ml) extra-virgin olive oil
1 Tbs (15 ml) balsamic or red wine vinegar
1/2 tsp (2 ml) sugar, or more to taste
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine. Serve chilled.
Makes about 1 cup (250 ml).
