::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: FOOD FUNNY :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thanks to reader Kerri Mousseau from Toronto, Canada for this true
food funny.

My dad's never been a big one for spending time in the kitchen. Mom's
a great cook, so he would just await the finished product, never
really concerning himself with what actually went in it. Well, one
Saturday, Mom was starting to make dinner, and realized she'd
forgotten to buy carrots. She asked Dad if he would mind running to
the grocer's. Dad returned, and handed Mom what he thought she'd
asked for - a bag of baby carrots. Mom looked at him funny and said
"What the heck is this??" Dad said, it's what you asked for. Mom
started to laugh - "Gary", she says, "You were close. I asked for a
small bag of carrots!!"

Dad STILL hasn't lived that one down

::::::::::::::::::::::::::: TODAY'S RECIPE ::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Our vegetarian theme continues with this easy and delicious apple
compote. If your diet permits, serve this topped with whipped cream
or a dollop of sour cream, or as a topping for ice cream.

Honey Poached Apples

4 to 6 cooking apples, peeled, cored, and
cut into eighths
1 cup (250 ml) dry sherry or apple juice
1 cup (250 ml) honey
2 Tbs (30 ml) lemon juice
1 tsp (5 ml) grated lemon zest
1/2 tsp (2 ml) grated ginger (optional)
1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over
moderate heat. Do not boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10
minutes, or until apples are just tender. Remove from the heat and
chill in the liquid. Serves 4 to 6.
