Here's another food funny from my friend Barbara. I'm going to try
this diet... one of these days.
The "Pasta" diet:
There's a new pasta diet - Just walk pasta bakery without stopping,
walk pasta candy store without stopping, walk pasta ice cream store
without stopping ....
All this week, as I have been publishing recipes from long departed
family members, I have been wondering what these fine ladies would
think of this internet business, and specifically this ezine. What
would they think of the fact that by pressing a few buttons and keys,
their old recipes would be instantly transported to over 50,000 people
in 126 countries. Some of these women never even saw a television
set.
It is particularly poignant in this case, because I know very little
about my great great aunt. I know she was the sister of my great
great grandfather, and that she was the only daughter with four or
five brothers, and that her son gave his life serving his country as a
Navy pilot in World War II. And that's about all I know of her. Yet
her recipe is being read by more people than she could have imagined,
via a technology she could not have dreamed of. I also doubt that she
ever dreamed that she would one day earn an ounce of immortality with
a recipe.
Susie Graham Innis' Raisin Pudding
1 cup (250 ml) raisins
2 cups (500 ml) water
1 cup (250 ml) flour
1 cup (250 ml) sugar
2 tsp (10 ml) baking powder
1/2 cup (125 ml) milk
1 cup (250 ml) brown sugar
2 Tbs (30 ml) butter
2 cups (500 ml) boiling water
Combine the raisins and the 2 cups water in a saucepan and boil until
all the liquid is absorbed. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder,
and milk in a bowl and beat until smooth. Pour into a greased 9x12x2
inch (22x30x5 cm) cake pan. Combine the brown sugar, butter, and
boiling water in a bowl and pour over the batter in the cake pan.
Bake in a preheated 350F (180C) oven for about 45 minutes, until the
cake has risen to the top of the pan. Serves 6 to 8.
