This drink is the Mexican version of the Bloody Mary, and the name
means "little bloody" or "little bloody thing" or something like that; it's
hard to translate. Traditionally it is served as an accompaniment to straight
tequila, and the two are sipped alternately. You may add the tequila to the
drink and save yourself some work, or you may omit the tequila entirely
since it's also quite good on its own.
Sangrita
6 medium-sized tomatoes, peeled and seeded
Juice of 3 oranges
Juice of 2 limes
1 small white onion, chopped
1 tsp sugar
Salt to taste
1 tsp cayenne pepper (or to taste. A proper sangrita is quite spicy)
Tequila (optional)
Combine all ingredients except the tequila in an electric blender. You
may have to do this in batches, depending on the capacity of your blender.
Blend until smooth. Serve chilled or over a little crushed ice.
