Reader Allan Bethel sent a bunch of potato jokes, a few of which are
below.
I'll have more of Allen's potato jokes tomorrow if you don't boo and
hiss me
off the internet. If you never hear from me again, blame Allen.
Some people are very bossy and like to tell everyone what to do, but of
course they do not wish to soil their hands. You might call that type
"Dick Tater."
Some people never seem to be motivated to participate. They are
content to watch while others do. They are "Speck Taters."
Some people never do anything to help, but they are gifted at finding
fault with the way others do things. They might be called "Comment
Taters."
Today's "Christmas Around the World" recipe is quick and easy, no-fat,
and a
sure crowd pleaser if I ever saw one. Tell the kids they're eating
jelly, and
tell the adults they're eating cabbage. Who said you can't fool all of
the
people all of the time?
Icelandic Christmas Salad
1/2 medium head red cabbage, shredded
1 Tbs (15 ml) red currant jelly
1 Tbs (15 ml) preserve or jam of your choice
(raspberry preserves or apricot jam are both good)
2 Tbs (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
Put the shredded cabbage in a sieve or colander and cover with a plate
and
several cans to weigh the plate down and compress the cabbage. After 3
to 4
hours, drain the cabbage and place it in a large bowl. Combine the red
currant
jelly, the preserves or jam, and the lemon juice in a small bowl. Toss
this
mixture with the cabbage until well combined. Serves 4 to 6.
