Thanks to reader Suzan Sander of Cupertino, CA for this food funny:
A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things
when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of
it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout
line, but she got in front of him.
"Pardon me," she said, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you
feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son, who
just died recently."
"I'm very sorry," replied the young man, "is there anything I can do
for you?"
"Yes," she said, "As I'm leaving, can you say Good bye, Mother!' ?
It would make me feel so much better."
The young man agreed, and ass the old woman was leaving, he called
out, "Goodbye, Mother!"
When he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was
$127.50. "How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few
things!"
"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.
If you like oranges, then you'll like our "Pre-Holiday Diet" dessert.
Boiling the oranges takes the bitterness out of the peel, and
combining them with almonds gives this flourless cake a Middle Eastern
flair.
Orange Almond Cake
2 large oranges (seedless navels if available)
6 eggs
1+1/2 cup (375 ml) ground almonds
1/4 tsp (1 ml) salt
1 cup (250 ml) sugar
1/2 tsp (2 ml) cinnamon
1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder
Orange slices for garnish
Wash the oranges and boil them whole in enough water to cover them
completely for 30 minutes. Drain and allow to cool. Cut into
quarters and remove any seeds. Process to a fairly fine but still
coarse puree in a food processor or electric blender. Beat the eggs
in a bowl until thick and add the orange puree, ground almonds, salt,
sugar, cinnamon, and baking powder. Mix well and pour into a deep
buttered and floured 9 inch (22 cm) cake pan. Bake in a preheated
400F (200C) oven for 45 minutes or longer, until the center of the
cake is firm to the touch. Remove the pan to a cooling rack and allow
to cool before turning out onto a serving dish. Serve garnished with
orange slices or fresh berries. Makes one cake, approximately 8
servings.
