"Still Honest People Out There"
A few days ago my husband and I visited a large city
and went to shop at one of the large warehouse type
stores. We bought a cart-full of groceries and other
things. At the end of our shopping spree, my husband
wanted to buy some 5-gallon buckets of oil for his farm
machinery. As a result, we had to re-arrange the "stuff"
in the cart.
We put a large box and a case of drinks on the bottom
shelf of the cart. We ate lunch at a table outside the
store and enjoyed the nice weather for a few minutes.
When we got to the car to unload the cart, I unlocked
the car and put my uneaten lunch in and got in and
waited for my husband to finish unloading the cart.
A couple of days later, as I was packing the car to return
to our ranch, I realized that the large box and the case
of drinks were not in the car. My husband had taken the
oil out of the car and put it in his truck, so I thought he
might have done the same to the box and case of drinks.
After arriving back at the ranch and questioning him
about it he didn't recall removing the box or case of
drinks from the car. We came to the conclusion that we
must have left the box and case of drinks on the bottom
of the cart.
While shopping, we had stayed at my son's home, and
thought we could have left the items by accident at his
house. He checked and said there was no box or case
of drinks in the garage. He asked where we had
purchased them, then said he would go out to the store
and see if they had been turned in. I had no hope that
they had been turned in. The store is a very busy one
and in a very large town with a high crime rate and what
seems to be a lot of people who are out to take anything
they can for as little as it costs them.
To my surprise, later in the afternoon my son called back
and told me that the items had been turned in and he
had picked them up for us. I was glad I was sitting down
when he told me because I was so shocked.
This episode has reaffirmed my faith in humankind.
There are still honest people out there.
By the way, the large box was a new VCR for my almost
90 year old mother-in-law.
