It's no surprise that pepper is the world's most popular spice. It also
may be the world's oldest on record. "Sprinkle with pepper and serve" is
the last step in a recipe for diced pork and apples from the world's
oldest surviving cookbook attributed to the 1st century Roman gastronome
Apicius.
